2 days excursion: Boat tours on the Mono River Grand Popo

Day 1 Cotonou – Grand Popo
Departure from Cotonou around 08.00 am. We will reach Grand Popo in about 2 hours, depending on the traffic on the road.
After a cup of coffee or other drink, we will board a rowing boat for a cultural excursion to the villages Gbècon and Hêvê. The boat will go through the mangroves of the river, according the tide of the water. By foot we will visit the villages.
We will see the ancient colonial buildings, the protection and conservation of sea turtles, drink fresh coconut juice, visit Voodoo temples, the Royal Palace of Grand Popo, an agoutis farm (popular animal to eat) and more. This excursion takes about 2 hours.
After the visit, we will enjoy a picnic at the beach.
Later in the afternoon we will visit the DBI Dagué Voodoo Temple, which is run by women. Some rituals are shown and some information about Voodoo is given.
We will drive to your hotel where you can spend the evening and night as you wish.
Day 2 Grand Popo – Cotonou
Around 06.00 am we depart to the pirogue for the birdwatching to bird’s island. You can observe different migrant birds, like herons and hawks, that come here for nesting, and also geese. If you’re lucky you might even see an alligator or water lizard. Slipping on the water between the waves, you will see how the Guin people practice the traditional fishing, such as acadja or épervier. This excursion takes around 3 hours. You will have breakfast at the hotel.
After checkout from the hotel we will visit the village Tokpa-Aïzo. The beautiful green landscape in the area has many usefull plants and trees for the inhabitants.
Like the palm tree, from which red oil is made, palm wine and baskets. Taste the sweetness of the liquid dripping from the palm trunk. Also the kapok tree grows here, which was used for many cotton like materials, mattresses and pillows. The women in the village show you how above mentioned products are made. The men show you how sodabi is made.
A percentage of the circuit tariff is allocated to the village women « Gbevivi ». They tax their incomes in order to buy a mill. (1000 per pax)
We will have lunch in a local restaurant in Grand Popo.
After lunch we will drive back to Cotonou and, if interested, stop on the road in Comé where you can buy the famous pottery from Sé.
